What is a Cat Cafe?
A cat café is part cafe, part cat adoption center. Visitors can relax with a group of adoptable cats in a home-like environment that is designed to keep our resident cats content. Guests can also enjoy craft-brewed coffees and teas, and locally baked goodies. Food and beverages are prepared and served separate from the "cat room" due to Health Department regulations.
When will Surfcat Cafe open?
We hope to be open by the end of 2016.
Where will Surfcat Cafe open?
We are currently looking for a purrfect location in Ventura, California for our very unique cafe.
Where will the cats come from?
We are excited to be partnering with Ventura County Animal Services and aiding them with maintaining their no-kill status.
How many cats will be at the café?
That depends on the size of the location, but approximately 10-15 cats.
How will you keep the cats from becoming stressed?
Cats will be introduced slowly to Surfcat Café. Once they arrive their happiness and safety will be our first priority. Initially they will be welcomed in a quiet, private area before transitioning to the Lounge. Once in the Lounge, we will keep an eye on them to ensure they are happy in an interactive environment with people and other cats. The café will have a human-free zone, for breaks and litter boxes. Rules for keeping people and cats happy and safe will be explained and posted.
Will children be allowed in the cafe?
Yes, but they must be accompanied by a parent or an adult. We also plan to have special times available for groups of kids for educational programs, such as story time with cats. We want to give children the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy cats as much as we do.
How can I get involved?
We are a 100% non-profit entity and rely exclusive on donations and volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are available. We are planning to launch a Crowdfunding Campaign in the near future, to fund our startup costs. You can also support us by liking our Facebook page and following us on Instagram and Twitter. Click here to visit our 'How to Help' page.
Do I need to make a reservation to see the kitties?
Reservations are preferred and will be available online. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows.
Can I bring my own cat or dog to the cafe?
No, we will provide some really cool cats for you to hang out with. The cats will all be vet-checked and current on vaccines, etc. prior to moving in. Sorry no dogs allows at this time.
What if I fall in love with one of the cats, can they be adopted?
YES! This is why we are here. We will provide a safe, home-like setting for adoptable cats to roam freely with lots of cat-designed furniture, shelves and anything that makes a cat happy. Guests can interact with the cats and get to know their personalities. We hope to make many love connections this way. When a Surfcat gets adopted, another one moves in! Not only will the cats at Surfcat find forever families, but it also opens up space for the shelter to rescue even more cats as well.
How can you serve food with cats roaming around?
Due to Health Department Restrictions, food will not be prepared or served where the cats reside. Once purchased, you will have the option of bringing food and beverage into the cat lounge; No outside food or beverages will be allowed.
